Announcing: Eve Arnold Estate sponsors Photography Award

Women in Art Prize Photography Award

Art Vox had the privilege of interviewing Michael Arnold, grandson of the legendary photographer Eve Arnold, as the Eve Arnold Estate again joins the sponsors of the Women in Art Prize 2025. Michael shared insights into one of photography’s most groundbreaking figures.

Born to Russian immigrants in Philadelphia in 1912, Eve Arnold broke barriers in a male-dominated field, becoming Magnum Photos’ first female member in 1957. Her fearless approach led her to document the Civil Rights movement, gaining unprecedented access to Malcolm X and the Black Muslims.

Eve is perhaps best remembered for her exceptional photographs of luminaries: politicians, musicians, and artists—capturing intimate moments with Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Jacqueline Kennedy, and most famously, Marilyn Monroe.

“If a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given, it is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument” she once said, a philosophy that defined her work.

Her accolades include an OBE, the Master Photographer honour from New York’s International Center of Photography, and fellowships from the Royal Photographic Society. From Hollywood stars to migrant workers, her intimate portraits revealed humanity’s shared threads, creating an unparalleled legacy that endures beyond her passing in 2012.

Congratulations Eve Arnold!
On 1st November 2024 Eve Arnold was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame. She joins a prestigious list of some of the greatest photographers of all time. A Fitting tribute to her groundbreaking legacy that continues to inspire generations of artists.
