Violeta Sofia, Award-winning Artist, Photographer and Activist

Announced as one of the Women in Art Prize 2025 Judging panel

It was a pleasure to collaborate with Women in Art to interview Violeta Sofia, one of the distinguished judges for the Women in Art Prize 2025. Her methodical approach to her practice shone, as she discussed using her lens to challenge perceptions and celebrate human diversity, particularly focusing on female representation and inclusivity.

As an award-winning artist and photographer, Sofia has established herself as a powerful voice in contemporary art. Her work blends creative portraiture with compelling narratives, earning her exhibitions at prestigious institutions including the National Portrait Gallery and Christie’s. This recognition speaks to her ability to transcend artistic boundaries and create work that both challenges and engages viewers.

Her influence extends beyond gallery walls, with her photographs gracing the covers of major publications such as Elle Italia, Deadline Hollywood, and The Telegraph.

Sofia’s commitment to advocating for female inclusivity and representation in the arts, particularly for women of colour, infuses every aspect of her practice. Through her lens, she consistently challenges stereotypes while celebrating the authentic experiences of her subjects.

Whether capturing the vulnerable moments of celebrity portraits or creating fine art photography that speaks to broader social narratives, Sofia’s work serves as a powerful tool for storytelling and self-expression. Her ability to bridge divides through visual storytelling continues to inspire both emerging artists and established professionals in the field, cementing herself as a compelling voice in contemporary photography and activism.
